Red Elm

Red Elm (Ulmus rubra)

Color: Reddish-brown to dark brown heartwood with grayish-white to light brown narrow sapwood.

Characteristics: Red Elm is a little heavier and harder than Grey Elm. Overall it is heavy, hard, strong, durable and very coarse grained.

Properties: texture is rather coarse but machines readily and bends well. Medium luster; open pores, annual growth clearly defined. Good finishing characteristics, stains and fills well.

Uses: Manufactured into furniture, cabinets, wall paneling and barrels.
